Bee Gees Guitar Is Up For Auction

The Gibson J45 acoustic guitar that Maurice Gibb used to compose the Bee Gees’ breakthrough hit “Jive Talkin’” will be going under the hammer on September 12 at the Gardiner Houlgate auction house. This guitar is one of over 400 other instruments up for grabs at what may be the largest ever auction of guitars in the United Kingdom.

The late Maurice composed “Jive Talkin’” on the Gibson J45 acoustic after picking up a rhythm that his car’s tires made while crossing a bridge in Florida. The single’s success led to the Bee Gees writing more tracks for the 1977 film Saturday Night Fever and ultimately rising to international stardom.

Maurice offered the guitar as a giveaway prize on The Bruno Brookes show in 1987. Together with Barry and Robin Gibb, he autographed the guitar to add to the prize. The guitar went on sale in 2014 on British television show Four Rooms.

Another guitar which Maurice Gibb previously owned will also be up for auction on Sept. 12: a custom-made 1968 Gibson EBS-1250 double-neck, said to be the only such guitar made by Gibson in 1968. Maurice sold this guitar to another musician and collector in 1974. According to auctioneer Luke Hobbs, both the Gibson J45 acoustic and the 1968 Gibson EBS-1250 double-neck have never been up for public auction before. They are expected to fetch over £10,000 each.

One more legendary guitar up for auction on Sept. 12 is a certain Maton guitar. George Harrison used this guitar at the Beatles’ last appearance at the Cavern Club in Liverpool in 1963.
